Stock exchange gains on last trading day of 2023

The Colombo Stock Exchange closed up on the last trading day of 2023, CSE data showed.

The All Share Price Index rose 27.60 points (0.26 percent) to 10,654.16. The ASPI had opened at 8,509.60 on Jan 2, 2023.

The S&P SL20 index, which tracks the top 20 largest and most liquid stocks on the CSE, closed up 0.75 points (0.06 percent) at 3,077.01.

Turnover remained low at 642 million. Index heavyweights pushed up on small transactions in dull trade as investors stayed away because of the year-end holidays.

The year’s highest daily turnover level was recorded on July 28 (7,7bn), and the lowest on May 4 (252mn).

There was a net foreign inflow of 21 million.

Sampath Bank Plc (flat at 70.50) and Hayleys Plc (down at 71.40) shares saw the most active trading volumes of the day.

The top positive contributors to the ASPI were Hatton National Bank Plc (up at 169.25), Commercial Bank of Ceylon Plc (up at 95.50), and Richard Pieris and Company Plc (up at 20.50). (Colombo/Dec29/2023).
