Dance performance at Jaffna Cultural Centre

As part of continuing celebrations of the 75th Republic Day of India, a cultural event was held at Jaffna Cultural Centre (01 Feb) by a team of Indian dancers led by Smti Namratha Mehta performing four classical Indian dance forms Odissi, Kathakali, Manipuri, and Shatriya.

The Consulate General of India organized the event with the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.

Consul General Shri. Raakesh Natraj, in his inaugural speech, noted that these dance forms represent each part of India. He said it goes beyond that and presents a holistic history of Indian art and culture.

Odissi dance traces its origins to the ritual dances performed in the temples of northern India, Kathakali, is a well known stylized dance drama from the South Indian state of Kerala, Manipuri, is a dance form from Manipur in Northeastern India, and Shatriya is a classical dance form of Assam.

Consul General said that the dance forms from India are considered as classicial not purely because of their tradition but also because of the diversity and how they have become part of the cultural life of the people.

The dance performance at Jaffna Cultural Centre witnessed a packed hall with more than 500 people witnessing and appreciating the cultural performance. Parliamentarians, religious leaders, Consulate officials, and other dignitaries participated in the event.
