LKR 600m India Grant for Accident & Emergency Unit at Mannar Hospital

The Government of India and the Ministry of Health and Mass Media of Sri Lanka signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of an Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit at the District General Hospital (DGH) in Mannar.

The initiative, with a grant of LKR 600 million from India, aims to construct a two-storey building and provide essential medical equipment.

Santosh Jha, the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, and Dr. Anil Jasinghe, the Secretary of the Ministry, signed the Memorandum of Understanding.

Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, was present at the ceremony.

This project aims to meet the urgent need for emergency medical services in the region, enhancing the hospital’s capacity to deliver timely care during critical situations.

It will also help address the gap between patient demand and available bed capacity.

The initiative is part of India’s larger development cooperation in Sri Lanka’s health sector.

This cooperation includes the Suwa Seriya ‘1990’ ambulance service, COVID-19 medical support, the Dickoya multi-specialty hospital, upgrades to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, as well as district hospitals in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu, and the surgical unit at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital.

Further Indian grant assistance is under consideration for expanding the Suwa Seriya service and constructing a four-storey medical ward complex at DGH Mullaitivu.
