Wasantha in talks on resilient food systems
The Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development of Sri Lanka, Wasantha Samarasinghe, accompanied by Ministry Secretary Mr. K.A. Vimalenthirarajah, visited New Delhi from Sept. 24–26 to participate in *World Food India 2025*.
During the visit, Samarasinghe held bilateral meetings with India’s Minister of Food Processing Industries, Shri Chirag Paswan, and Minister of State for Cooperation, Shri Murlidhar Mohol. Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in food security, cooperative development, and capacity building, as well as exploring broader areas of mutual interest.
The Minister also addressed a thematic session on “Food Loss and Waste as a Catalyst for Food Systems Transformation,” sharing Sri Lanka’s perspectives and emphasizing the need for collaborative solutions to food waste, sustainability, and resilient food systems.
In addition, Samarasinghe met with senior officials from the National Cooperative Export Limited (NCEL) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED), discussing opportunities in agricultural exports, cooperative best practices, and supply chain development.
He also engaged with CEOs of leading agri-business and food companies during industry interactions organized by CII and PHDCCI.
He held discussions with representatives of industry associations on the sidelines of the event.
These engagements provided a platform to explore partnerships, investment opportunities, and technology exchange in the food processing and agricultural sectors.
The visit reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to deepen economic ties and expand collaboration in food security and cooperative development.
