Madras High Court dismissesa new writ petition

The Madras High Court dismissed a new writ petition seeking an inquiry into the assets declared by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay, while filing his nomination papers for the Perambur Assembly constituency in this year’s elections.

The First Division Bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan refused to entertain the petition, as they had already entertained another case of a similar nature and ordered notice, returnable by June 3, to the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation).

The judges said they would issue a detailed order by the end of the day, explaining the dismissal of the latest petition.

They also dismissed two other writ petitions that sought a similar inquiry into the assets declared by AIADMK candidates D. Jayakumar and C.Ve. Shanmugam, contesting from the Royapuram and Mailam constituencies, respectively.

The new case against Mr. Vijay had been filed by M.P. Venkatesh, 32, of Kodungaiyur in Chennai.

In his affidavit, the petitioner said that as a voter in the Perambur Assembly constituency, he was entitled to be informed about the financial status of every candidate, and that the nominees were obliged to make truthful disclosures.
