President Putin calls Prime Minister Modi

Two days after his summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and informed him about the discussions he had with the U.S. leadership.

The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that Mr. Modi presented India’s “consistent position” about finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine, while Mr. Putin presented his “assessment” of his conversation with Mr. Trump.

“India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come,” Mr. Modi said while thanking Mr. Putin for sharing the “insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska.”

This is the second conversation between Mr. Modi and Mr. Putin in a fortnight and was indicative of the pace of consultations between Russia and India, as it was held days before the arrival of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Moscow.

Earlier, on Aug. 7, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval had met Mr. Putin in the Kremlin, even as Mr. Trump declared an additional 25% tariff on India that the Ministry of External Affairs had described as “unfair.”
