Attempted attack on Chief Justice condemned

Opposition leaders condemned the attempted attack on Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge saying the “shameful” and “mindless” act reflects the “hate, fanaticism, and bigotry” engulfing the society.

A 71-year-old lawyer, in a breach of courtroom decorum, tried to hurl a shoe at the Chief Justice during a court proceeding, but was stopped by security personnel.

Calling it “unprecedented, shameful, and abhorrent”, Mr. Kharge said the incident was an “attack on the dignity of the judiciary and the rule of law.”

The Congress president stated that it was disturbing that a sitting judge, who had risen to the nation’s highest judicial office through merit, integrity, and perseverance, was targeted in such a manner.

Posting on micro-blogging site X, Mr. Modi said the attack on CJI Gavai had “angered every Indian”.
